Chime Machine
A robotic music-box-style instrument that plays songs using rotating cams
January – May 2024 Ben Jacobson · Broderick Bushnell · Aaron Beals
Background
Constraints
Semester-long design challenge: minimum 40-second song, at least 5 unique notes, materials limited to provided stock (metal conduit, 1/8" plywood, DC gearmotors, solenoids), and no more than 50g of 3D-printed parts.
Approach
Rather than software timing, we chose a music-box cam system — twelve rotating cams on a central shaft, each physically triggering a hammer at exactly the right moment. Mechanical precision instead of electronic scheduling.
Outcome
The machine was selected as an example project for future classes after being recognized at the semester end showcase.
