Chime Machine
A robotic music-box-style instrument that plays songs using rotating cams.
January – May 2024 Ben Jacobson · Broderick Bushnell · Aaron Beals

Requirements
- Semester-long design challenge: minimum 40-second song, at least 5 unique notes, materials limited to provided stock (metal conduit, 1/8" plywood, DC gearmotors, solenoids), and no more than 50g of 3D-printed parts.
Approach
- Rather than software timing, we chose a music-box cam system: twelve rotating cams on a central shaft, each physically triggering a hammer at exactly the right moment.
- The machine was selected as an example project for future classes after the semester-end showcase.
