Protein Bar Guillotine
Automated cutting machine synchronized with a factory conveyor belt
May – July 2022 Ben Jacobson (Software/Electrical) · Dave Friedman (Mechanical)
Background
The problem
Protein bars needed to be cut to precise lengths on a moving conveyor line. Manual cutting was inconsistent and slow. The machine had to synchronize a blade to the conveyor in real time — at any speed.
My role
I handled all software and electrical work. Dave Friedman designed and built the mechanical structure. The project was completed over one summer.
Outcome
A configurable, easy-to-operate machine that cuts bars to exact specified lengths while adapting to any conveyor speed variation in real time.
