Seismic Base Isolation
A 3D printed linear roller mechanism that dramatically reduces building acceleration during seismic events.
May 2022 Ben Jacobson

Context
- Earthquake ground motion transfers large accelerations into structures; base isolation aims to decouple the building from that motion.
Approach
- I built a 3D-printed linear roller mechanism that lets a building model slide independently during simulated ground motion.
- I validated the acceleration reduction on a shaking table.
Build
Step through my design and build process.
