Homemade dumbbells cast from concrete, PVC, and 3D printed stencils

Background
Context
During the pandemic, gym equipment prices spiked — standard dumbbells were selling for $3–4 per pound. Building a set from concrete and PVC cost a fraction of that.
Process
3D-printed stencils centered the PVC handles in the molds and prevented shifting during the pour. Weight heads were cast from concrete mixed to a consistent ratio for repeatable density.
Result
The dumbbells have held up for years of regular use with no cracking or handle slip. Total material cost was under $30 for the set.
